YOGA IS FOR EVERYONE. FOR ALL BODY TYPES, ABILITIES AND BACKGROUNDS. ALL SEXUAL ORIENTATIONS, AGES, DISABILITIES AND ETHNIC GROUPS ARE WELCOME.
"What's the big deal?" Those were my words exactly when I was suggested to do yoga after a car accident when I was 16. The back pain started well before then but this accident didn't make my inflamed back feel any better moving forward. It wasn't until I was 22 when a friend convinced me to try a gym yoga class. The class started with breath work- what?! I'm sitting still and just breathing? This sounded like the craziest thing in the world. I was at the time a full time student, part time worker and going through a terrible divorce. I never stopped moving enough to feel what was going on. Just sitting and breathing I noticed my body relaaaaaaax. The teacher led us through a series of moves I've never done before. I had no idea what foreign language they were using or what a Chatarunga was. But my body felt great, I was glistening in sweat and blissed out at the end with Savasana, Corpse Pose, left to lay down for minutes, alone, in silence, with myself. I could hear the monkey mind chatter, exploding in my ear. I noticed it. The experience hit me like a ton of bricks. I thought it was just my back that was malfunctioning but I realized it was my whole nervous system. My inner voice was not serving me. Yoga is was helped me tune into the fact that I experience stress that overwhelms me but I have a tool- my breath and these movements- that can guide me back to a peaceful state. Cultivating this body awareness years later, that stronger inner voice led me to find an autoimmune disease within my body. Something inside me said, "Take a look at yourself. Your throat chakra is blocked." And low and behold... it was true. I was diagnosed with lifelong Graves' disease- seen in those with hyperthyroidism. My intuition changed in all areas of my life.
This is what led me to you. Someone shared this gift of yoga and a yogic lifestyle to me and it changed me. It saved me. And I want to offer it to you! This world is absolutely scary and insane but sometimes can be so beautiful. Everyone seems to be running in circles, the direction for life's path is not very clear, and we are bombarded with negativity constantly. Whether we like to admit it publicly or not, I know first hand that we all get overwhelmed, scared, sad, anxious and yoga can be a tool to combat that. Just as equally, yoga can be a form of celebration when things are going just swell too. Maintaining the balance will come in handy on a rainy day. Workshops may include crystal work, bead work, food, journaling, meditating, artwork, sacred stitching, oil mixing, palo santo wrapping...etc. depending on class size and age range. Yoga touches all parts of life so educational workshops or lectures involving spirituality, equal rights and the like are available with Liz. This includes textured hair workshop or storytelling like those done in the past. Yoga is so much more than just the asana (poses) themselves. Yoga is a lifestyle that is based off the 8 limbs or sections of yoga. Including activities to round out the practice, we ensure we are balanced and focused on what matters like non-violence, truthfulness and purification. I love to send home yogis with a parting gift so the activities are centered around being able to take something tangible home. This makes the workshop style experience classes or group sessions extra fun- particularly with a party favor! Here are some photos from workshops below.
